In Illinois, the final season of whitetail deer hunting allows those hunters who didn’t fill all of their tags to come out and shoot antlerless deer. It’s a good time to take stock of the prior hunting season and to plan for the next season. The deer herd in this part of Illinois is healthy and abundant. Since we are located in Hancock County, by the Golden Triangle in Illinois (Pike County, Adams County, and Brown County), which is basically farm country and woods, the hunting conditions on our property itself are inducive to whitetails. Even though it was extremely cold, on that last weekend of hunting we saw about 20 whitetail deer. Most of the deer were females that had grouped up already. But we did see a group of 4 bucks laying down together. 2 bucks were in the 150 class (they still had there antlers) but the other 2 had already dropped their antlers.. The Illinois whitetail deer archery season starts on October 1st each year and continues through mid-January. When walking the property to remove the tree stands, we also saw about 40 turkeys.
